Cruel to Be Kind – C2BK

September 13th, 2012

Turning what you think you should do to be happier into something you really want to do.

Why do we resent doing what we know makes us feel better?  It’s science.  We are suspicious of solutions that seem sentimental or forced.  Even though expressing gratitude, appreciation, and committing acts of kindness makes us happier, we shrug these activities off as too simple, too easy.  We continue to do what we have always done and feel as happy as we have always felt.

The solution:  a game!

A game of benevolent assassination.  Really.

Cruel 2 B Kind – a game of benevolent assassination

You can put this game to work in your place of business, your school, or your community.

It’s free!  All you need is mobile communications tool:  texting, tweeting. We can change the world as we get happier.

Watch the game developer, Jane MeConigal, in one of her TED talks.

I’d love to hear back from you if you try this out.  Even if only two of you place, you will start a revolution.  People will want to know what you are doing, I promise.

Learn Whatever You Want; Teach Whatever You Know While Serving the World

Think of someone you know for whom the current educational system is not working.  Now imagine designing a customized educational experience for that person. For right now, you do not need to worry about money, transportation, or anything else that would get in the way of your creating a system to unleash her creativity and maximize her potential.

Imagine combining online education and games with activities in your communities.  Imagine your student being able to follow any thread of learning as far as she wants to and finding support anywhere along the journey.  Imagine great Coaches, either in person or virtual, who know how to motivate and support your student as she faces the inevitable challenges of any worthy venture.

Imagine that your student gets to be of service.  She gets to decide if she wants to do the service in person or online.  She could read to little kids, proofread documents for foreign English speakers or help weed in a community garden.

Any interest she has she can follow.  She can also teach anything she knows to anyone in the world who wants to learn what she knows.  It does not matter how old she is or where her student lives.

Now imagine that this process is all very, very simple.  She fills out a profile that is fun, inspiring, and helps her know herself better.  She chooses what she wants to learn and how she wants to learn it. Her choices, such as wanting to design a skateboard park, lead her to study subjects she never considered before, like engineering and math.

Now imagine this process continuing for a lifetime.  Your student could earn multiple graduate degrees if she wants or she could start her own business or NGO.  She continually gives back as she learns, both by teaching what she knows and serving in her community and all over the world.

Now imagine that all that is needed to make this dream come true for your student, and for everyone in the world, is a software program, an elegant algorithm that connects those who want to learn with those who have something to teach. Those who want to serve can easily find those who need help.  Philanthropists can easily find projects they want to finance, and great ideas can be incubated and implemented by people who love doing just that.

Imagine an emancipation of creativity all over the world.  Solutions to problems of energy, environmental healing, racism, depression, cancer, and blindness are discovered in cooperative games, in engineering camps, through entrepreneurial projects, and in people’s garages..

Imagine genius flowering all over the world as it has never before been allowed to flower.

Until now. Until Global U.

Saying “YES” to what IS

April 23rd, 2012
Oh, we adorable humans do love to fight with what is, don’t we?

”It’s not fair!” we cry, or “I had a different plan!”  Once we learn to say an unconditional ‘Yes’ to what IS, we can start moving toward a solution, and we get to be fully alive and present to everything that happens to us.

Metaphor Be With You

April 12th, 2012

Aren’t we humans funny?  Sometimes we have to have the most obvious things explained to us.  Guess what happens when you lean into the hot tailpipe of a motor bike?  You are right!  You get burned.  Guess what happens when you take things personally and lean into other people’s suff?  You are  right!  You get burned.  Here is the photo of my leg to prove it.Vicki's burned leg

Sigh.  This week’s feature article is about how we can take an everyday occurrence and turn it into a metaphor to enrich our lives.  Personally, if I am going to get burned, I want to get something positive and perhaps even funny out of it.
